TRO: 3087 - Sheriff

3087 is a Battletech alternate universe where The Jihad never happened. Instead, political fracturing continues in the wake of the technological and military upheavals of the 3050's. Its history is told through the pages and designs of TRO: 3087. With any luck this series will be the last anyone hears about 3087.

SLF-2409 Sheriff
Overview
The vexing problem after the Jade Falcons’ massive gains in the Lyran Commonwealth was keeping them. Never content to let anything else do what could be assigned to a BattleMech, the Falcons designed and fielded the Sheriff as a dedicated garrison and lawmaking ‘Mech.
Attached to garrison units, it’s often deployed in pairs or individually to exert Jade Falcon control on distant areas of their worlds. A cost-conscious design, it’s been instrumental in keeping order and making “Jade Falcon” more than a name for a distant government to millions of people living under the reign of a distant government.
The design has seen a number of rebuilds and tweaks since its inception as designers, commanders, and even Khans have placed their thumbs on the Sheriff’s delicate balance of cost, service, and effectiveness in a stand-up fight.

Capabilities
The Sheriff is primarily a patrol and peacekeeping ‘Mech. It carries a spacious cockpit rivaled only by those designed to serve as a field HQ. On-site analysis equipment and state-of-the-art communications gear allow it to call on vast resources even while isolated in the field.
MechWarriors assigned to Sheriffs are rarely Trueborns. Clan military police vie for the few slots available and are often paired with a Freeborn partner until garrison commanders are satisfied they’ve learned how to serve the public and the Jade Falcons as a whole instead of merely punishing those who step out of line.
In combat, the Sheriff has performed respectably against pirate raids and other small-scale engagements. Its heavy laser can slice off heaps of armor with each shot and the six-point advanced tactical missile gives it a versatility one would expect from an OmniMech.
In full-blown combat scenarios, its speed is a concern, but the small engine is more than adequate for its primary duties and price point.
Some warriors have expressed a desire for more from the ATM launcher, especially in terms of incapacitating unarmored vehicles. Rumor suggests the Jade Falcons are researching the possibilities.
The Sheriff’s humanoid form carries its “Buster” Heavy Laser in its right hand. However the laser can be retracted, either automatically or manually with its left hand. This frees both of the Sheriff’s hands to perform a variety of constructive tasks.

Battle History
In 3077, Juan ElClaybrooke, in his Sheriff was assisting the excavation of The Pit, a Succession War-era attempt at a Castle Brian on Kandersteg. The expedition stumbled on a company of pirates who intended to take The Pit’s ancient nuclear weapons for sale on the black market.
After a night of running battles, ancient traps, and stymied garrison forces, Juan defeated the pirates and downed their dropship, the Wealthy Fire before they could depart with the warheads.
Juan, or ElClayb as he’s popularly known, has become a hero across the planet, but has requested reassignment to his home world of York.

Notable Variants
The many cooks in the kitchen for the Sheriff has resulted in a number of variants.
One is the “Rifleman” variant, which drops the Heavy Laser for an LBX/AC 2 and drops the ATM for one half the size. Designed for long-range sniping, extended range ATM ammo is usually included.
The SLF-2707 carries a pair of SRM 6’s in place of the ATMs and puts a sextet, pistol-style Micro Lasers in each hand. This variant excels at intense, close-in combat and boasts a distinctive profile, as the plethora of weapons, new control systems, and jump jets give it a bloated look, as if it were stuffed full of weapons.
What appears to be an early model has been seen on some worlds. It uses basic Inner Sphere components to fulfill its mission, including machine guns for use with rubber bullets. The anti-infantry weapons made it appear inimical to the citizens it was protecting and the familiar Inner Sphere components failed to inspire the desired level of awe. Both issues were fixed with the Block 2 Sheriff.
