The Morality of Deadpool

So Deadpool has been out and it was a lot of fun. Pew! Pew!

I wanna talk morality. It’s as close as this movie gets to having a theme. F’r fuckssake, the thing begins with a slo-mo, 3D pan of Deadpool killin’ folks to the tune of “Angel,” which is designed to tell you as quickly as possible Deadpool is no angel.

I'm pretty sure this is the right song.

Deadpool (2016)

It’s been over a month since I saw Deadpool. I thought I’d posted my thoughts on it, but…guess not. I saw a late night showing on a Sunday. I had hoped that it would reduce the number of kids present and I was very, very wrong.

So…I found the audience for suicide Squad. 

“Do bad. / Get killed.” So much to unpack in those lines.

ID4 #2. I’ve said everything I have to say on this.

Eye in the Sky Jessie Eisenberg in a drone movie. This honestly looks better than the Ethan Hawke one.

Another “protect the president” movie. Wasn’t Gerald Butler in one of these already? It would be cool if they would nuke London rather than let them have the president. Looks like it has slightly more legs than the rest, but it doesn’t. We know it doesn’t.

EDDIE the Eagle…happened.

Aaron Paul in a weird heist movie. Triple 9. I have no idea what’s happening in this thing.

Also, our local theaters have children telling people to turn their phones off and nothing makes me less likely to comply than being told what to do by a child. WTF local theaters? WTF?

Daredevil: Born Again by Frank Miller

Daredevil is not and will never be on a top ten list, except for possibly “Top Ten Things Called ‘super’ That Can Stub Their Toes on Florescent Orange Safety Equipment,” a category in which he would take nine slots out of ten, ultimately losing to a comatose Miss Marvel.

His momma so fat—oh, right his mother left him as a child and never loved him so her body proportions are unknown.

Born Again is about The Kingpin learning that Matt Murdock is Daredevil and destroying Matt Murdock. Murdock gets better. The end.

I can't tell you guys how great it is to have a blog, a schedule, and a few days of responsible pad in case something goes horribly wrong. It's all grown up and...predictable.

Having a time table in your life, a rhythm is one of those surprisingly cool mature things. I just...love being...so...mature.

I guess that's it. It's strange that it’s these guys. There are a lot of other characters out there that are great and have some really good books, but fundamentally, these are the characters I like reading about. They're a motley crew--well, less motley than my original list. One homosexual, two females, two non-Americans (if Damian counts, even though I'm sure he would be an American citizen if Bruce Wayne is on his birth certificate), an alien, a time-traveler, six different tax brackets and two effective amnesiacs, but it is a whole loaf of white bread. Guess I can blame the comics industry for that. Sounds convenient.

That said, with the exception of All-Star Superman and Rorschach, most of these characters have a compatible feel to them that would let them interact in some way. I mean, you'd have the killing versus no killing sides, which would be Batman versus...well everyone but Booster Gold, I guess.

Though I would read the hell out of a Batman/Booster Gold team-up versus a Jenny Sparks lead Authority consisting of Midnighter, Deadpool, Cloud 9, Ultimate Cap, and Damian Wayne.

Alright, I think it's easier for me to break down the characters I like into four distinct groups:

Characters in a Great Story: So, maybe I like these guys more for the story they're in. All-Star Superman, Cloud 9, Adrian Veidt, Rorschach, Cable(Cable & Deadpool)

Like them Because They are Jerks: It is a shitty reason, though I worked really hard to come up with that 'righteous violence' thing, which I stand by, but it is just a fancy way of saying “I like a character because they are a jerk and I'm just going to go ahead and act like it's actually a call-out to the fundamental nature of the medium.” Midnighter, Ultimate Captain America, Damian Wayne.

The Merc with a Mouth meets the Megalomaniacal Monarch-for-Life in Metal! Completely unlike anything you've ever seen before, including the time that Deadpool teamed up with that other half-metal ruler of his own sovereign nation, or that time that Deadpool teamed up with someone new every month. While any casual reader might think that this odd couple might be odd enough to warrant 23 pages of the title characters fighting each other every month until the series is canceled, we've bombarded each episode with high amounts of cancer cures and arcane knowledge to give it the one thing no one expected; legs*!

Penny Reviews-Stupid Hero Tricks

Batman and Robin – The Sum of Her Parts, Parts 1-3 (Issues 17-19)

‘The Sum of Her Parts’ is an aptly named, three-story arc that introduces Absence to Gotham City. The first half of the arc finds her appropriately missing. Only her work identifies her; missing body, missing finger, missing fingernail. Absence works with things that aren’t there; it’s her requisite Batman character signature, and though it may not stay that fresh in subsequent appearances, it is in this one. I'd much rather her brand of plotting freak (and gross affront to science) than another psycho in a flamboyant costume, sidekick turned bad, or gritty muscle man screaming Batman's (or his own) name.

The dynamic between Dick and Damian has dropped from arguing to bickering. Their conversations are short here, but still entertaining. Listening to Damian talk about how ridiculous dating is and whine about Dick being too friendly break both the investigation and recap threads up nicely, in addition to starting a countdown timer to his inevitable, disastrous, and hilarious first romance. Paul Cornell just took over the book from Grant Morrison, and he seems eager to assure us of his Batman qualifications, giving us well-executed deathtraps, knockout gas, monologing, a crash through a window, and some good, old-fashioned world’s best detecting.
