Good commentary as always. I've nothing to add to it; while watching the last few eps, just been thinking about the Q Continuum gathering up god-like beings who "ascend" out of the urban blight that is the Alpha Quadrant, analogously to how Earth's Federation gathers up those same blighted planets.

Oh hey, speaking of worlds where Kirk waltzed in, overturned society, then waltzed away without dealing with the consequences, it would've been grand if Tasha Yar's home had been one of those planets.

I never thought of the Q as being from different races, but it actually makes sense.

Having Turkana IV be Kirk's handiwork would be interesting. It would undercut a lot of the things in the original series, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. TNG repudiates TOS in a couple of places and Turkana IV would really put a point on that.

The concept of a Federation colony as a failed state is also one that's rich in possibilities and implications. I love Turkana IV and Tasha Yar so much for that, even if those possibilities are only slightly explored in TNG.
