Fanfic Review: Enterprise One, Ep 1

I reviewed a Star Trek fanfiction/fanproduction called Enterprise One, where everyone from TOS, TNG, DS9, and VOY are all on Kirk's Enterprise together. It's a wild idea.

Cats (2019) and Meditations on Comics (How Stories Fit Into Boxes [and also stellaris])

Previews

I Still Believe - These movies are excruciating. Chirley Kemp? Sad Disease Girl II? Gulf Tears? Every cliche in the book. IDEA: Religious inspo-porn, but every 4th scene is them talking about how immigrant kids deserve to be taken from their parents.

Respect - My dad said “interesting” to himself during this trailer, which is itself pretty interesting.

“The Call” - Oh man, Harrison Ford is gonna get out-acted by a fucking CGI dog in this movie, isn’t he?

Rise of Skywalker and Stellaris

Previews

30 seconds of theater ID, then “Now, our...ad for the theater’s own subscription service.”

Barb and Star in Whatever - It’s obnoxious. It feels like a SNL skit made into a movie. SNL skits are sprints; they’re like Gimli, good over short distances. And that’s what this feels like. All respect to Kristen Wiig. She’s great, it’s just hard to find a good leading role for her. If the lord had descended from high and made people act like adults and possibly written something good for Leslie Jones, maybe we’d be having a Ghostbusters reboot right now.

But as far as Barb and Star, that’s gonna be no for me dawg.

TBnTB Video: Disaster

Riker: Can save Earth.
Riker's legs: Can save the Enterprise.

Does it work though? Does Troi's throughline work? Are her stakes real?

The Beige and The Bold is hosted on Anchor and is available on most podcasting platforms. New episodes go live on Sunday nights at 10:00 PM CST.

TBnTB Video: Silicon Avatar

Obviously, there were some issues with the pen. In Star Trek, it's always cool to bypass the pre-flight checklist because you know the episode isn't going to end at the 11:47 mark with a flash of bright, white light.

In the real world, that weird little circle of fuck-you will tank your efforts and force you to draw with a mouse if you don't make sure the wacom tablet you've used a dozen times already still works. It's a learning experience and I'm now viscerally motivated to do a full equipment check prior to each drawing session.

Maybe that's the real legacy of "Silicon Avatar."

Force of eWaste

So, if you've been following along with us, you're probably aware of the jarring, random scene from Steven Seagal is The Force of Execution that served as inspiration for this.

Otherwise, I'm sorry.

Houma Movie Club: Stand Up Guys

So Houma Movie Club happened this weekend. Stand Up Guys was really good. My final estimation for this round is:
1) Cabin in The Woods
2) Stand Up Guys
3) Europa Report
4) Stephen Seagal is the Force of Execution

Anyway, our viewing order for the next round:
1) Hellraiser
2) The Prophecy
3) License to Drive
4) Planet of the Apes
5) C.H.U.D.

Minecraft Linkstorm 8 & 1/2

I haven't finished Minecraft Linkstorm #8 proper yet. I have not really been in a writing mood lately.

I'm probably leaving San Antonio soon. Things haven't really worked out for me here. It's frustrating; apparently Texas is doing well and SA itself is facing some rock-bottom unemployment rates. Over the past two years, it feels like I've tried everything to find a career. All I've gotten are a few interviews, some motherfuckers trying to shake me down for free labor, some motherfuckers trying to shake me down to pay for more school, and a few jobs that ask me to rip other people off in exchange for not enough money to live on. Or worst of all, a resounding silence.

I'm just really tired and I'm really angry and I'd like to set everything I own on fire because it seems like it'd be a real time-saver.

Luckily, I'm selling lots of it on eBay, starting with my comics.

My Battletech books and Magic cards are up next.

Houma Movie Club: Steven Seagal is the Force of Execution

I really enjoyed Force of Execution. Just when you think it's going to be shit, it jukes and it's just crap. One of my favorite quotes is when Mr. Alexander talks about sending hit squads back "dead in a box," when you either send people back dead or send people back in a box (and safely presumed dead). It's like Steven Seagal is playing someone with a particular level of inarticulateness.

Next week is Europa Report.

Long Box Goodbye 07

The best thing about splitting the videos up is that I can upload them as I finish them and get something up for the 0100 deadline.

I'll have more up tomorrow. All the shooting is done; it's just editing now. :(
