I know it's been a while, but let's do a movie roundup for July.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 24th)
Looks good. The Punisher/Hulk elements seem to be supporting elements as they should be. I don't know why we need to make biological web shooters or immediately undo the last movie. I don't know why Spider-Man is fighting The Hand and...I wanna say, Denzel Washington from the movie Fallen, but I'm willing to go with it.
Has nothing to do with the comics, AFAIK, but I think we're good with that.
The Outer Threat (July 10th)
Honestly, more compelling than Disclosure Day. Not good. Hell no, not good. But more compelling.
Her Private Hell (July 24th)
This is weird as shit and there's a hot guy in it, so...yeah buddy. Say less.
Horsegirls (July 17th)
I've seen folks talk about Inspo-porn. Inspirational stories that gloss over the difficulty of being disabled. It's a thin line, but this looks like a good movie that kinda skirts the better side of that line.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe (July 23rd)
If it's one thing doing this has done, it's give me strong opinions about how to use iconic songs in trailers. And Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero" should not be anywhere near this. Well, no human should be near this either.
We're not even discussing an A-rated, F-reviewed series pulling up its D-rated characters to do some thematically incompatible--oh, bullshit. This is all bullshit. Network television yearns for death and SFSU shows it will try to take all of us with it on the way out.
Usually, I save the TV shows for the honorable mentions, but this level of hate calls for a regular mention.
The Odyssey (July 17th)
The best selling point for this movie is its haters, honestly.
My final judgment--like with all Odyssey adaptations--is how they handle Argos. Yes, the dog dies, but no film so far has beaten the original story's gut punch. It's probably worth it to learn Homeric Greek just to shed manful tears over its original language.
Evil Dead Burn (July 10th)
Warner Bros. Uh. Okay. It's an Evil Dead, I don't really dispute that. I liked the vaguely camp elements of the franchise, but I understand how that wouldn't let it survive in a modern movie milieu.
Good luck, I guess? Personally, I can't be bothered to remove the Warner Brothers tag from my drafting process.
I Want Your Sex (July 31st)
Gregg Araki has done some--I'm assured--good work in the past. His movies are the kinds of things I'd like to watch on a date. A forth or fifth date, and those are rare.
I Want Your Sex doesn't look like it will be placed alongside Nowhere, Totally Fucked Up, or The Doom Generation. And not JUST because James Duval isn't in--oh. He is? Well, of course he is.
Night Nurse (July 10th)
Speaking of totally fucked up...
Motor City (July 24th)
I've never seen an Alan Ritchson movie, but I just might.
