17 to 01: The Cloud Minders

If anyone is listening to this episode in--what I assume is the blasted, post-apocalyptic landscape of--post-2016 United States, "get you a girl who can do both" was high humor for the pre-ruin civilization.

17 to 01 is available on iTunes. It updates Thursday mornings at 2:00 AM ET / 1:00 CT. We're also amazingly on Stitcher.

I didn't realize the Eugenics Wars were started by a toupee.

"Is your planet like this?"
"Hm? Oh no, Vulcan is much worse."

It's fun to see Spock and Kirk courting in parallel. I almost want to see what an Uhura/Rand or Sulu/Chekov version would've looked like, but I don't think you can get a stronger contrast than Kirk/Spock, and this ep at least was really leaning on their prior characterization. Later series probably could've pulled it off. I wouldn't've minded a Tasha/Troi or (non Dax) Bashir/Worf ep.

That weird narration at 12min: man, maybe StarFleet brainwashes all their command officers into keeping mental logs? For telepathic extraction or something? Or maybe it's just Kirk and anyone who's mind-melded with Kirk. Or! All *Vulcans* do it, and *Spock* has brainwashed Kirk.

"Looking for Par'Mach in All the Wrong Places" kinda did that with Worf and Quark, but it's another neat characterization paradigm that TOS sets up and other series could've benefited from using (the other being the "get everyone drunk and ready to talk about their feelings in the first three episodes" idea, which is gangbusters).

The logs keep going. We're on the cusp of doing The Motion Picture and lemme tell ya; the logs keep going through to the very end of the series. It's a phenomenon I never questioned until this run-through and it's amazing.
