LET-O Leto
Overview
The Hellfire Pirate Band’s raid on New Avalon in 3074 destroyed the public’s willingness to take emerging democracy movements lightly. At least two such organization claimed they provided the fifth column assistance necessary to make the raid a success. The aftermath caused two changes: a draconian push to find disloyal citizens and urgent military action on the realm’s increasingly treacherous nobles and successful rebel armies.
That action took the form of The Archangel Project. The Federated Suns would construct the ultimate combined-arms formation. A series of vehicles, battle armor, and BattleMechs, built specifically to defeat their enemies and restore order. No expense was spared, the best minds from across the Inner Sphere were hired, and they received the highest priority for cutting-edge military equipment.
The competing urge to root out democracy sympathizers quickly blunted that edge. Top-flight scientists from The Archangel Project, some of which had to be smuggled out of other states in intelligence operations, were detained on suspicion of being less than loyal to their new governments. Testing and line production were held up as every omni component and supplier had to be vetted and revetted for connection with “subversive movements.” Popular myth has it that the first few Letos were assigned to units without omni pods, but no sources exist to substantiate that.
In the end, the Leto and Hyacinth were created, with the former being more successful. Built up from the Phoebus, it’s the same chassis, carrying OmniMech components to meet the project’s shortfalls in producing complementary armor and vehicle designs.
Despite its birth pains, the Leto is a reliable unit which has become popular throughout many parts of the Inner Sphere. Its factory was one of the few taken intact by the Federated Hellfire Territories’ Citizens Army when they eventually captured New Avalon.
Capabilities
The Leto is agile, fast, and dedicates almost half of its weight to weapons systems. In the FHTCA companies with enough clout to get top-tier pods for them, they’re a prized possession. Prior to 3083, the Federated Suns would sell them on the open market to fund special projects.
On the battlefield, the Leto, like most OmniMechs can be hard to pigeonhole. Fire support, reconnaissance, and the occasional assault roles have all suited it well.
Due to conflicting agendas during the creation phase, the targeting system of the Leto and its “sister” ‘Mech the Hyacinth, is poor at picking out infantry. This is partially to address rampant rumors that The Archangel Project was building a “superheavy” ‘Mech designed to scour the streets of citizens and replace them with triped robotic workers.

Battle History
Julia Alexander is a celebrity-cum-politician who was critical of the Federated Commonwealth Civil War and active in post-war democracy parties. She was a moderate voice in the Federated Freedom Territories’ early political structure. Shortly after Chram Tait took total control of the organization, however, she was assigned to “represent the cause of freedom and democracy” in the ‘Mech and media arenas of Solaris VII.
Her Leto, A War About Nothing, has had moderate success in the arenas. She often forgoes the use of her advanced missiles as part of an elaborate and long-running bet.

Variants
It’s said the Leto Prime carries enough streak-interlocked radar systems to fry small flying animals before it even fires its missiles. A trio of extended range lasers tax its heat systems and do very little damage its missiles couldn’t. Jump jets exacerbate this, but make it a capable city fighter.
The Artemis IV guidance system of the A loadout doesn’t make up for the lack of streak systems. Their use in conjunction with a heavy laser and their ability to provide indirect fire support do.
Cost savings were the driving force behind the B configuration. A popular, low-tech autocannon backed by a bevy of short ranged missiles gives it a reputation as a competent duelist, but it’s a reputation thus-far unearned.
Designed to carry battle armor into combat, the C configuration was effective at its job early in the Leto’s life. A dirty bomb planted by pro-Davion rebels in the Corean Enterprises’ Augusta plant deprived the FHTCA of its last native supply of battle armor suits and left this loadout in the lurch.
