Coyote COY-4N
Overview
The Coyote is best known for participating in the 3081 SLDF actions against the Ghost Bears. Sent by First Lord Centrella’s Magistracy, they became emblematic of Operation Velvet Thunder. The operation’s failure to defend The Draconis Combine and the Coyote’s shortcomings in combat led to it becoming a laughing-stock amongst the Bears and many denizens of the Inner Sphere. Most citizens of the Draconis Combine see it as a symbol of The Star League’s token assistance in their hour of need. Those who scorn the Magistracy Armed Forces or their own nation’s involvement in The Star League point to the Coyote and Velvet Thunder as proof.
Few of its critics consider that the Coyotes seen in action in the early 80’s were the colonization support ‘Mechs Magesty Metals and Manufacturing brought to the Star League as demonstration units. Magesty planned on being the beneficiary of a new wave of colonization allowed by what they then termed “an unprecedented era of peace.” Their floor models were conscripted and sent to Luthien as The First Lord, despite her reservations, was determined to shame Successor States into action with the Periphery nation’s willingness to fight the inexorable Ghost Bear assault.
The ‘Mech made to power campsites and fight pirates was sent up against one of the most advanced militaries in human history. Magesty Metals later sued the Magistracy for damage to the design’s reputation but even after seven years, their predicted boom in colonization hasn’t materialized. Neither have sales for the Coyote as anything but a rugged, front-line BattleMech.
Capabilities
Capabilities
When not tooled for battle, the Coyote is uniquely equipped. Its hands allow it to clear brush and help make shelter, its flamer can create firebreaks and ward off predators, and leg-accessible cargo pods allow it to haul crops, ore, supplies, and other important items where supporting colonists can easily reach them. A lift hoist allows it to haul exports to and imports from trading dropships.
Both the colonization and front-line configurations are still charged with identifying and engaging pirates. They often operate alone in that mission, which limits their abilities against a significant raider force. Some Coyotes have tried to harass larger pirate bands, but their speed is rarely up to the task.
Battle History
Battle History
When the SLDF and DCMS forces requested Hegira to withdrawal from Luthien, millions tried to flee on a handful of dropships. Hundreds of troops, tons of military material, and thousands of citizens who were left in the first wave were fenced off by the victorious Clanners and instructed to wait.
As the Ghost Bear offensive continued on other worlds, the Combine had little interest in using valuable transportation resources to pick up beaten soldiers and hungry mouths. In the Star League, each layer of bureaucracy issued reports which reduced the numbers left behind until there was no political awareness of those left inconveniently abandoned. Only the First Lord’s reconciling of League numbers with her own from the Magistracy gave any indication of the true scale of the crisis.
It still took months for the Star League to act. During that time MAF Coyotes provided warmth and basic sanitation for forgotten refugee families and tired soldiers. Their radios and external speakers were the basis of small societies, transmitting news, warnings, and information to huddled masses. They defended their charges against scavengers and criminals. For 7 months on Luthien, Coyotes saved hundreds of lives on a daily basis.
Variants
Current line combat units are equipped much as the original retrofits on Luthien; additional freezers were added to the cargo spaces in each leg, the lift hoist is swapped for a small LRM launcher, and the sensor pods and heavy duty searchlight were replaced with a pair of machine guns.
Variants
Currently, Magesty Metals is working on removable heat sinks for the Coyote. In theory, the two heat sinks which give the ‘mech’s left arm its distinctive double-bumps could be removed and externally powered. They could then be used to keep ice, research equipment, or perishable supplies cool. The biggest snag so far has been making coolant connections that can safely withstand repeated attachment and reattachment, but research into omni-technology from the Andurien Alliance has proven promising.
Koudo Allard-Liao, the rising Solaris star and alleged illegitimate offspring of former champion Kai Allard-Liao, pilots a modified Coyote. Far different from a colonization ‘Mech, it boasts a 50% higher top speed, a binary laser cannon, and stealth armor that make it formidable at range. For Solaris’ close-in battles, the Kaiyoat mounts six light machine guns and a hatchet.
