17 to 01: A Piece of the Action

We assumed that you all wanted to hear more about Libertarians. That's the kind of thing you like, right? We also give some time, but not enough time, to a number of planets that Star Trek does not visit. The lack of confederate-themed-fraternity-party themed planet hurts us all.

I really enjoyed this one, but it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. I like the meat of these types of episodes, but this one has no meat.

17 to 01 is available on iTunes. It updates Friday nights at 8:30 PM ET / 7:30 CT. We're also amazingly on Stitcher.

I feel like I'd enjoy this ep more if I knew '60s gangster movies better... There's that visual gag at the beginning where every guy on the street is carrying Tommy Guns; I've seen The Monkees do that "make up an impossible card game to distract the guards" gag; and I'm kind of amazed that every single woman throughout is chewing gum instead of smoking.

Random thoughts...
-That "minimize someone else's cultural contamination" rider on The Prime Directive seems highly abusable.
-Hurray! Spock fails at radio.
-If there's three in the room and only two to beam up, how does Uhura know which two? (I guess she asks Spock to clarify after the camera cuts away.)
-I'd love to have a pool table sturdy enough to walk on, with green that wouldn't tear. I wonder if they came up with that short before or after setting the camera up high for the other shots.
-Hah! McCoy left a communicator on-planet! It's nice that things don't always clean up tidy.
-They never pay up to the kid they promised a piece of the action to.

All the good ideas you guys dig out of this ep, I'm trying to think if Futurama *hasn't* done them. I feel like they've covered a good number of them.

About the gum, I hadn't really caught that. I know Gene Roddenberry rejected advertising for cigarettes because he didn't like it. Allegedly. The same source says he didn't like alcohol either, but...

Anyway, even though this episode exists because Roddenberry wasn't around enough to stop it, maybe he had a hand in that.
